Food Shelf Capacity
A large part of the work of Hunger Solutions Minnesota is focused on building food shelf capacity.
Ending hunger requires public policy intervention and systemic change. Hunger Solutions Minnesota is the hunger relief community’s leading voice at the Minnesota legislature. We promote the good work that food shelves do to support their community, advocate for additional funding for the food shelf network, and support policies that reduce poverty and break down barriers to self-sufficiency.
Food Shelf Funding
Hunger Solutions distributes more than $3 million per year in grants, ensuring food shelves have access to the funding they need to serve their communities. These grants include:
- Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless Challenge Grant,
- Fall and Spring state grants,
- Emergency and Equipment grants, and,
- Mobile food shelf grants.
We also partner with the USDA, DHS, food banks and food shelves to administer Minnesota’s TEFAP program which distributes nearly 11 million pounds of food to food shelves.
Hunger Solutions works to raise public awareness about hunger in Minnesota. Through press releases, letters to the editor, media interviews, targeted publicity campaigns, and a strong social media presence, we mobilize public support for hunger relief.
Minnesota Food HelpLine
The HelpLine connects low-income Minnesotans to the food they need through referrals to food shelves, meal programs, farmers markets, and SNAP enrollment assistance in their communities. Our “Food Shelf Finder” map helps connect individuals seeking help with all of the food resources in their local community.
Hunger Solutions works with our partners to collect timely statistics on how many individuals are using food shelves. We analyze the trends, compile regular reports, create visual aids, and map hunger needs throughout Minnesota. We also track national hunger trends and share relevant reports and analysis with our partners.
We also offer a free Food Shelf Database for food shelves who need help tracking basic client statistics.
Through our contacts and networks of hunger partners at the state and national level, Hunger Solutions connects food shelves to resources for equipment and food distributors, cross-sector contacts in the agriculture and healthcare fields, and connections with local public officials. If a food shelf has a need, chances are we have a connection or partner to help.
